NEW YORK—Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. signed a deal for Japanese drug maker Eisai Co. to sell experimental weight-loss drug lorcaserin in the U.S., if it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The deal, the value of which largely rests upon the commercial success of lorcaserin, came earlier than expected as investors await the FDA’s reaction to new weight-loss treatments. Arena, which will face an FDA panel in September and a decision by late October, is vying against Orexigen Therapeutics Inc. and Vivus Inc. to develop a new obesity treatment in the U.S.
