A French BioBeach with the Economic Department of the French Embassy, the French Office of Sciences and Technology and the San Diego French-American Chamber of Commerce at the Salk Institute

A comparison of two successful approaches to foster innovation in the life sciences
France and San Diego’s biotechnology industries have much more in common than one might think.  In 2005, 174 biotech companies in San Diego (228 in France) were developing 50 compounds in Phase I trials (41 in France) and 58 in Phase II (39 in France).  Both face similar challenges, such as facilitating technology transfer to industry or reducing the funding gap for translational research. However, the drivers that have fueled their industrie’s growth vary significantly.  France possesses world-class pharmaceutical and chemical scientists coupled with some of the most advanced clinical trial facilities worldwide.  San Diego’s tightly-connect network of angel investors, research institutions, incubators and biotech firms makes it arguably the best place to start a biotech company in the world. Our distinguished panel will discuss the specific strengths of their regions, the common challenges both industries face, and will explore avenues for further collaboration between France and San Diego in the life sciences.
